Orange Beach Welcomes Former Residents, Guests to Year of Alabama Small Towns and Downtowns Event
3/4/2010
GULF SHORES and ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – If thoughts of sugar white sand and turquoise water make you recall fond memories of times spent in Orange Beach, return to your beloved city as it welcomes both current and former residents and visitors to its Year of Alabama Small Towns and Downtowns celebration. The Orange Beach Festival of Art offers two full days of visual, musical, literary and performing arts and joins more than 210 other cities and towns scattered through the state that are playing a unique role in the Alabama Tourism Department’s year-long campaign. Held March 13 and 14 at the city’s waterfront park on Canal Road, this free festival begins each day at 10 a.m. and draws to a close at 5 p.m.
“The Orange Beach Festival of Art is a wonderful experience for the whole family,” said Wanda Price, art center coordinator. “Our goal is for our community to experience the arts in up close and for children to participate in the joy of doing art.”
New in 2010 to this annual event is the addition of four attractions: a literary arts tent featuring local, regional and celebrity authors and book readings and signings; a performing arts stage showcasing various theater troops and dance groups; a children art alley with hands-on art activities; and a musical stage showcasing regional songwriters.
The festival also features regional and national artists displaying unique pottery, handmade jewelry, fine wood crafts and hand-made garden art. Guests will see raku pottery and hand-blown glass created on-site during this juried art festival, which is one of the first shows of the season.
On Saturday at 1 p.m., the city of Orange Beach will unveil a sign commemorating the Year of Alabama Small Towns and Downtowns at the Orange Beach Waterfront Park. This historical marker was donated by the Alabama Tourism Department and was written by local authors Margaret Childress Long and Michael D. Shipler. The public is encouraged to attend.
The Orange Beach Arts Center will be provided free transportation to and from the festival site. Guests may park at the Orange Beach Recreation Center and board the shuttle. For more information, go to www.obfoa.com, or call the arts center at 251-981-2787. For more information about the unveiling ceremony, call 251-981-6629.
